Our practice
Train the mind like you train the body.
The Cairn Practice makes journals for the inner side of sport and movement — the attention, the pressure, the doubt, the sense of who you are. The parts that shape performance as much as the training does, and are just as trainable.
The belief
The inner game is trainable
Most of us train the body with structure and intent, then leave the mind to look after itself. Yet how you handle nerves, setbacks, focus and self-talk shapes what you're actually able to do on the day. A journal is one of the simplest, best-evidenced ways to work on it — a few honest minutes on the page, before and after the effort. Not a diary. A practice.
The name
Why a cairn
A cairn is a small stack of stones that marks the way when the path isn't obvious. Ours is a quiet guide for the same reason — something steady to return to when motivation dips, when a season turns, when you're not sure what to work on next. One page at a time, it points you forward.
The method
Grounded in research
Every prompt is drawn from established frameworks — Acceptance & Commitment Training, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, sport and performance psychology, and the neuroscience of how habits form. We don't reinvent the science; we translate it into questions you'll actually answer, built around how you train.
What makes them different
- Printed to order
Made fresh and shipped from the printer nearest you — less waste, better paper.
- Discipline-specific
Built around how you actually train, not one generic template stretched to fit everyone.
- Structured to reflect
Space to prepare and process — before and after each session, race day and beyond.
- Made to last
A5, cream uncoated paper and a durable binding that holds up to a season of use.
Why I started this
I started The Cairn Practice because the biggest shifts in my own training never came from a new plan — they came from paying attention to what was going on in my head. I couldn't find a journal that took that seriously without making it a chore, so I made one.
