A training log for your mind — Six Months of Deliberate Mental Training

You already apply rigour to your body — sessions, sets, distances, times — and adjust what isn't working. The Performance Mindset Journal asks you to train your mental game with the same discipline, over six months, until the skills that decide a performance stop being luck and start being practice.

It's built around six evidence-based psychological skills — goal setting, self-talk, imagery, arousal regulation, pre-competition routines, and attentional control — treated not as concepts to understand but as skills to rehearse. You start by rating where your mental game stands today, build each skill deliberately, then carry one rotating focus through every training week. The honest entries are the point: not the version you'd give your coach, but what you actually thought, felt, and did under pressure. That's the data that changes things.

It works on its own, and it's the applied companion to the rest of the practice: the identity work tells you who you are, and this trains how you compete.

What's inside

  • Before you begin — A baseline self-assessment scoring all six skills, then foundational exercises to build each one: a three-level goal structure (outcome, performance, process), a self-talk audit, imagery practice, your individual zone of optimal arousal (IZOF), a step-by-step pre-competition routine, and attentional control.
  • The training log (the core — six months) — Each week sets a rotating mental skills focus and a training intention, maps your sessions with a key mental focus for each day, then logs each session in three phases — before, during (under pressure), and after — tracking arousal, focus quality, flow, and self-talk. Every week closes with a mental game review; every four weeks, a deeper review that re-rates all six skills against your baseline so you can watch the numbers move.
  • The season close — A six-month review of your worst and best mental performances, the skill that changed your game most, and who you've become as a competitor.
  • Reference toolkit — A distilled guide to the six mental skills, the nine dimensions of flow, and three guided imagery scripts (pre-competition activation, handling adversity, post-performance processing) to adapt to your sport.
